AUSTRALIAN OPEN 2010

Two-time world champion Dennis Priestley claimed the Australian Open Players Championship crown after a 6-3 win over Mark Hylton

The 60-year-old veteran took the £5,000 title at the Revesby Workers Club in Sydney on Sunday, securing a place in October’s World Grand Prix in the process.

Priestley opened his challenge in Sydney with a whitewash of David Clegg and a 6-3 victory over Heath Daley, before scraping past Steve Hine in a deciding leg in the third round.

He then defeated top Australian Simon Whitlock 6-3 in the quarter-finals and edged out defending champion Paul Nicholson in another 11-leg tussle at the semi-final stage.

Priestley then ended the hopes of Rugeley-based left-hander Hylton in the final to edge back towards the world’s top 16.

Hylton, who was competing in his first PDC ProTour decider, opened with wins over Australian pair Pat Orreal and Peter Asmussen before battling past Robert Thornton and Mark Walsh and overcoming Sean Reed 6-5 in the last four.

Although he was defeated in the final, Hylton’s run will almost certainly win him a Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship debut as a Players Championship Order of Merit qualifier, as well as boosting his hopes of winning a World Grand Prix spot.

Nicholson had defeated current DPA Order of Merit leader Rob Modra in the quarter-finals but his bid to retain the title came unstuck at the semi-final stage.

Former world champion Steve Beaton and Welshman Mark Webster were first-round casualties, while Tony Eccles and Richie Burnett went out in the last 32.

The £22,000 Players Championship was the culmination of a series of events in Australia, with Whitlock winning last Sunday’s Oceanic Masters and Thornton and Eccles taking Australian Grand Prix victories.

Australia’s Lavinia Hogg recently edged out Chrissy Sherrin to become Australia’s representative at the PDC World Darts Championship held at the Barnsley Metrodome in England on Saturday June 12.

“To have the opportunity to represent Australia and the DPA at the World Darts Championship is a dream come true” commented Lavinia. “I have seen Anastasia Dobromyslova (current women’s world number 1 player) compete at Dart Tournaments on television and being able to compete with her and other great players is a fantastic opportunity and it all seems so surreal.” “I still can’t believe I’ve been offered such an opportunity” she quipped.

Lavinia also paid special mention to Australian player Simon Whitlock who has dominated the PDC tour this year. “Simon has being doing some great things overseas this year by winning 4 tournaments and being runner-up at the World Championships, I hope I can replicate his success.”

Lavinia will be flying out from Australia to London on the 6th June.”

Australia/New Zealand will have 4 players in this year’s PDC World Championship. Paul Nicholson, Simon Whitlock, Warren Parry and Phil Hazel.

Paul has competed on the PDC circuit for over a year and shown great form. Paul is also the current Australian Open Players Championship champion, where he defeated Scotland’s Robert Thornton.

After returning to the DPA, Former BDO World Championship Finalist Simon Whitlock has shown why he is the best in Australia, taking his place in this year’s Grand Slam of darts, claiming the scalps of many top players including current BDO World Champion Ted Hankey. Simon qualified for the World Championship by leading the DPA Australian Grand Prix Order of Merit.

Phil Hazel (New Zealand) has gone from strength to strength, Making the final 32 televised event in Las Vegas this year was Phil’s first attempt in a Players Championship, Phil returned to New Zealand to take out their National event and the title of New Zealand’s No1

Last but not least, Warren Parry (New Zealand), Warren won Australia’s most prestigious event the Oceanic Masters, this was the third time Warren had taken out the event and secured his spot at the PDC World Darts Championship.

Our players will be competing with the best players in the world and a piece of the $2 Million Dollar prize fund.
The world’s richest darts tournament will be held from December 18-January 3 at Alexandra Palace in London.

The World Championship’s popularity has continued to grow in the two years since the move to Ally Pally, and ticket sales have soared since being released in June.

OCEANIC MASTERS 2009 The 2009 Oceanic Masters will be held at the Otahuhu Club in Otahuhu, Auckland New Zealand. The event is OPEN to all Australian and New Zealand dart players

The Oceanic Masters will take place in Auckland on the 23/24 and 25th of October.
Australasias most prestigious dart event will once again carry the biggest winners prize in the southern hemisphere.
A return airfare and accomodation package to London in December and first round entry into the Ladbrokes.com PDC World Darts Championship plus $NZ1500.00 in cash

Direct buy ins to the main event are open to the first 84 players with the main event a 128 players,  section play to knockout . After the first 84 buy ins all players will need to qualify for one of 32 open spots

The Coogee Bay Hotel Sydney will come alive on Thursday August 6 as players from all states line up in the Linddale’s Personnel Super 4s Exhibition Event.

Players from all over Australia in part of their warm up for Sundays Australian Open will compete for their home state against the best in the world from the Professional Darts Corporation along with a Full capacity NZ team led by World championship Qualifier Phil Hazel, 2 x oceanic Champion Warren Parry and fellow New Zealanders Warren French and Preston Ridd

The PDC team will be spearheaded by the vastly Experienced World Number 19 Denis Ovens. Joining him is the world number 6 Terry Jenkins. Both had impressive wins overnight at the Stan James World Matchplay with Denis defeating the Dangerous Dennis Priestley 10-5 whilst Terry Jenkins defeated colorful Qualifier Peter Wright by 10 legs to 4.Both will leave for Australia shortly after they’re Stan James Campaigns.2008 Australian open champion Robert Thornton will join the highly fancied combination along with the 2007/2008 BDO Champion Mark Webster in probably the strongest ever Quartet of players ever to visit Australia.

Out to knock the boys from the UK off will be the highly fancied Queensland outfit led by Australians best Simon Whitlock, joined by International representative Shane Tichowitsch who has appeared in numerous Holland Events such as the IDL and WDT .Both will be joined by GSOD table leader Steve Macarthur and Rob Modra.

Unfortunately due to injury Australian legend of the oche Russell Stewart will miss the event. THE DPA along with all players wish Russell a speedy recovery. The ACT team is his absence will be led by Rod Neeson and he will be joined by Goulburns Rod Crawford, Mittagong  based player Dean McGladdery and DPA regular Don Whittington

NSW will be led by 2 x oceanic Masters Champion Barry Jouannet with the vastly experienced Dave Fitzpatrick and Paul Neighbour .DPA player Bill Aitken from Northern NSW rounds out their team, whilst in a new initiative the south Australian family duo of Peewee Bottrell and Raymond Odonnell will be joined by the experienced NT combination of Chippy Miller and Allan Scott who are preparing for Sydney by competing in a week long event being held in Brisbane. No doubt both guys are looking at fairing well on the International stage representing the northern territory.

International Star Paul Nicholson returns to Australia In a number of days to prepare to lead his Victorian side alongside Tony Crampton and the experienced Tommy Hyland. they will be joined by newcomer Steve Nichols making his 2nd appearance in a DPA event

Unfortunately due to logistical problems the team from Triple 8 USA will be unable to compete in this years event but will be back in 2010 for this event .A DPA invitational Team has been chosen from the order of merit rankings to take their place in the event and will be led by Australian legend of the oche Wayne Brown and feature DPA Regular Circuit players Jon Bunyard, Kim Anderson and Daniel Sim

Spectator entry in goodwill to the Australian darting public will be FREE for Thursday and Friday. The finals will be staged on Saturday August 8 with admission being $5 or free to any player entered into the PDC/DPA Australian Open.

Manley married wife Crissy in Las Vegas back in 2004, and progression to the last 16 of this year’s event proved an ideal present as he picked up a key victory. Walsh has recently replaced Manley in the top 16, forcing the 2003 Desert Classic champion to come through the qualifiers just to win a place in the main event. However, he gained revenge over Walsh with a fine display, living up to his “One Dart” nickname with some clinical finishing. He took out 100 to break Walsh’s throw in the opening leg, although the in-form Hertforshire star took out a superb 150 finish of treble 20, bullseye and double top to level. DENNIS PRIESTLEY 6-1 COLIN MONK
DENNIS PRIESTLEY opened the PartyPoker.net Las Vegas Desert Classic with a clinical 6-1 victory over Colin Monk.

Monk had battled through the qualifiers to win a spot in the Desert Classic for the first time, but his stay in the main event was made brief by a strong Priestley display.

While the pair traded finishes of 66 and 81 in the opening two legs, Priestley took the third with a 96 checkout and then broke in the fourth with a 136 finish to lead 3-1.

Monk missed four doubles to break back in the fifth, which Priestley took on double four, before the pair endured some wayward finishing in the next.

Monk saw a dart for double top land in double five, and Priestley stepped in to finish on double one to move 5-1 up and a leg away from the victory.

He then sealed victory by taking out 81 on double 18, setting up a second round date with either Phil Taylor or Jamie Caven.

WES NEWTON 6-3 ALAN TABERN

WES NEWTON’S love of the PartyPoker.net Las Vegas Desert Classic continued with a 6-3 win over Alan Tabern at the Mandalay Bay Resort.

Newton has twice reached the semi-finals of the tournament, and remains on course for another strong week in Las Vegas after seeing off Lancashire rival Tabern.

Tabern knocked out Raymond van Barneveld on his way to the quarter-finals last year, but never recovered from allowing Newton into a 3-0 lead.

Newton took out 90 in two darts for the opening leg, and immediately broke in the second before landing double 16 to treble his lead.

The Fleetwood ace also landed a 180 in the fourth, but Tabern took out 101 to get off the mark.

Double top moved Newton 4-1 up, but five missed doubles allowed Tabern to take leg six.

Newton moved a leg away from the win on double five, and though Tabern reduced the gap to 5-3 with a 100 finish a double 12 checkout ensured victory.

“This event and being in Las Vegas seems to bring the best out of me, so hopefully I can have a good run this week,” said Newton.

“Alan and I always seem to have good games and I was determined to get revenge for him beating me in the UK Open recently.

“I started well and kept it going throughout the match.”

COLIN LLOYD banished his PartyPoker.net Las Vegas Desert Classic blues with a 6-3 first round defeat of Peter Wright.

Lloyd had been a first round loser for the past three years in the Desert Classic, but ended that run against the big-stage newcomer.

Wright had qualified for his Desert Classic debut on Sunday, and then overcame Lloyd on his way to the semi-finals of the Las Vegas Players Championship on Tuesday.

However, Lloyd gained revenge to book his spot in the last 16.

Wright won the opening leg, but Lloyd replied with a triple salvo to lead 3-1, taking out 74 in two darts, 114 and then double top to push clear.

Wright took out 84 on the bullseye to reduce the gap going into the break, and finished a string of missed doubles from Lloyd to level on double top.

But Lloyd regained his range on the doubles, finishing double eight at the first time of asking to move 5-3 up before defying a maximum from Wright to seal victory on double 14.

JELLE KLAASEN 6-2 RONNIE BAXTER

JELLE KLAASEN powered into the second round of the PartyPoker.net Las Vegas Desert Classic with a 6-2 demolition of Ronnie Baxter.

Baxter entered the Desert Classic on the back of a semi-final appearance in the UK Open last month and Tuesday’s Las Vegas Players Championship victory, but failed to hit top gear against the Dutchman.

While Klaasen missed doubles in the opening leg, which Baxter took on double top against the throw, the youngster replied with three successive legs to edge away.

Double 16 for a 14-darter saw Baxter cut the gap to 3-2, but he missed the bullseye to level in the next before Klaasen took out double top.

A neat two-dart 61 finish put Klaasen a leg away from victory, which he sealed in style with a 12-darter, landing back-to-back 180s and double eight for the match.

TERRY JENKINS 6-1 SIMON WHITLOCK

TERRY JENKINS produced an impressive display to swiftly see end Simon Whitlock’s PartyPoker.net Las Vegas Desert Classic hopes with a 6-1 victory.

Jenkins showed the form which took him to the 2007 Desert Classic final to sweep past the qualifier.

After missing double top for a 160 finish in the opening leg, he landed double ten to lead before Whitlock took out double eight to level.

But Jenkins repeated the double ten finish to lead 2-1 and then hit tops to break throw.

A fine 106 finish put Jenkins 4-1 up, and he hit scores of 180 and 140 to leave double top in the next, applying enough pressure to force Whitlock to miss his one dart at the same bed.

Jenkins then sealed the win with a 98 checkout, finishing on double 12 to set up a tasty second round game with Colin Lloyd.

PHIL TAYLOR 6-3 JAMIE CAVEN

PHIL TAYLOR began the defence of his PartyPoker.net Las Vegas Desert Classic title with a 6-3 victory over Jamie Caven at the Mandalay Bay Resort.

Taylor headed to Las Vegas struggling with a back problem, but showed few ill-effects to dispose of the qualifier from Derby.

Taylor took a key 3-1 lead and held off Caven’s challenge to set up a second round clash with long-term rival Dennis Priestley on Friday.

Caven took the opening leg on double ten, but Taylor won the next three, including a two-dart 86 to break throw, to push himself ahead.

Caven replied with an 86 finish of his own, but a 180 was not enough in the next, with Taylor hitting a 177 and double eight to lead 4-2.

The qualifier opened leg seven with scores of 140 and 180 in reducing the gap to one leg, but double top edged Taylor towards victory before he hit the same bed to seal the win.

“Jamie put me under a lot of pressure but my finishing got me through,” said Taylor.

“He played very well, he’s one to watch for the future and he’s getting better every week.”

He added: “The back will be okay but it is affecting me. I decided to try and get fit and pulled my back on my bike.

“Now I get stiff towards the end of the day so I was glad to get through that.”

GARY ANDERSON 6-2 WAYNE MARDLE

GARY ANDERSON powered into the second round of the PartyPoker.net Las Vegas Desert Classic with a 6-2 defeat of Wayne Mardle.

Anderson won through the qualifiers on Monday to earn a Desert Classic debut, and produced a classy display to see off the two-time finalist.

Mardle opened the game with a 115 checkout, but Anderson replied in style with an 11-darter and then traded maximums before taking a 2-1 lead.

The Scot then followed up a double top finish with a bullseye checkout for a 121 in extending his advantage to 4-1 at the break.

Mardle returned to hit double top and reduce the arrears, but a 130 bullseye finish put Anderson 5-2 up and he sealed the win on double ten – having hit six from seven attempts at a double.

“It’s nice to get on stage and perform,” said Anderson. “I’ve never been great with first round games but it’s a relief to be through.

“I hit my doubles, which I’ve been struggling on recently, and can build on this.”

Anderson entered the match having needed treatment for an allergic reaction to an energy drink earlier on Wednesday, and added: “I’m still feeling a bit iffy so I’ll just stick to the coffee I think!”

JOHN PART 6-2 SCOTT BURNETT

JOHN PART began his bid for a second PartyPoker.net Las Vegas Desert Classic title with a 6-2 win over Scott Burnett.

The 2006 champion triumphed in the all-north American battle to jump into the last 16 and set up a clash with Jelle Klaasen on Friday.

Part kicked off the game with a 117 finish, and also took out 90 in leg two before punishing missed doubles from Burnett to lead 3-0.

He also won the fourth, hitting a 180 in a 14-darter, before Burnett – the North American Darts Championship winner making his televised debut – found his range on the doubles.

Double 16 got him off the mark, before double ten halved the deficit, although Part was too strong in leg seven to edge 5-2 up.

And the Canadian went on to wrap up victory in the next, with double four ensuring progression to round two.

Rocket Fires To Vegas Win

RONNIE BAXTER defeated Phil Taylor 6-2 to win the Las Vegas Players Championship.

Baxter picked up his first tournament win of 2009 with the £6,000 title at the Mandalay Bay Resort, condemning Taylor to only his second Players Championship loss of the year with a fine display.

Having been pushed all the way to a deciding leg by Japan’s Morihiro Hashimoto in the first round, he then defeated Davis Snider, Wayne Mardle, Kevin Painter and John Part to reach the semi-finals.

He then overcame Peter Wright 6-3 before taking victory against Taylor.

Baxter opened the final with a 121 finish and also led 2-0 before Taylor took out 104 to get off the mark.

Double eight and double 16 put Baxter 4-1 up before a 13-darter saw him move a leg away from victory.

Taylor fired in a 128 checkout for a 12-darter to stay in the game, but a 180 from Baxter sent him clear in the next – and he had enough breathing space to miss seven match darts before landing double one for the title.

Taylor, making his first outing since winning the Blue Square UK Open in Bolton recently after struggling with a bad back since, warmed up nicely for the defence of his PartyPoker.net Las Vegas Desert Classic title.

He saw off American duo Darin Young and John Kuczynski before whitewashing Rocco Maes and Simon Whitlock to reach the quarter-finals.

The world number one came from 4-3 down to defeat Alan Tabern 6-4 in the quarters, and saw off Gary Anderson 6-2 in the semis.

Wright’s run to the last four was his best-ever on the PDC Pro Tour, and should secure him a place in the stanjames.com World Matchplay – coming two days after he also qualified for the Desert Classic.

The Lowestoft player’s run included a whitewash of Colin Lloyd and a 6-1 win over Dennis Priestley, as well as a 6-3 defeat of Co Stompe in the last eight.

The tournament featured a brace of nine-darters, with Larry Butler and Wes Newton sharing an £800 bonus for the achievement.

Both, however, went on to lose the matches they were playing at the time, with Butler going down to Jan van der Rassel and Newton losing to Colin Osborne.

Wright’s run jumps him above Kevin McDine in the list of 16 qualifiers for the World Matchplay from the Players Championship Order of Merit.

However, they will be finalised following the Desert Classic – when the PDC’s top 16 qualify by right for July’s Blackpool event, meaning a player could still break into the top 16 with a good run over the next five days.

The PartyPoker.net Las Vegas Desert Classic begins on Wednesday and will be played through to Sunday at the Mandalay Bay Resort, and screened live on Sky Sports in the UK.

Craig Strooisma From Wollongong picked up his first ever DPA Australian
Grand prix title with a hard fought 6-4 win over Queenslands Wayne Brown in
todays final.

Strooisma who has attended every event on the 2008 circuit played well all
day to take the title from Brown a veteran of the Australian darts scene for
over 30 years.

Strooisma accounted for Phil Bottrell in their best of 9 semi 5-4 Whilst
Wayne defeated fleety in their semi by the same scoreline.

Earlier in the Day Russell Stewart had defeated Australian Grand prix leader
Paul Nicholson in the round of 16 by 3 legs to 2 .2006 Oceanic Masters
Winner Mitchell Clegg fell to Peter Corcoran

9 Days of World Class Darts

THE Professional Darts Corporation will stage its first Players
Championship in Australia this summer as part of the DPA’s expanded William
Cross Pro-Am series of events in August.

The William Cross Pro-Am will be held from 2-10 August at Shoalhaven Heads
Sports & Recreation Club, featuring four separate tournaments with prize
money in excess of $100,000.00

Two ‘Shoalhaven Classic’ events will be held on 2 and 3 August, with each
offering AUS$4,500 in prize money for players.

They will be followed from Monday to Saturday by the five-day Park Trent
Properties William Cross Pro-Am, which has been expanded in 2008 to include
players from South Africa alongside stars from Australia and New Zealand.

PDPA members can also enter the William Cross Pro-Am, with the top 16 ranked
players joining the top eight Australians and four players from New Zealand
and South Africa respectively in the AUS$40,000 Men’s Singles event, where
they will be joined by 32 qualifiers.

Sunday 10 August will then see PDC stars take part in the Australian Open
Players Championship, offering £20,000 (AUS$44,100) in prize money.

Entry will also be open to players from Australia, New Zealand and South
Africa, either through direct entry for AUS$65 before 4pm (BST) on Wednesday
30 July or through one of two qualifiers, which cost AUS$15 to enter each.
Entry for PDPA members will be £30, with entries closing at midday on
Thursday 31 July.

The Shoalhaven Classic events, William Cross Pro-Am and Australian Open
Players Championship will count towards the DPA Australian Grand Prix Order
of Merit.

The week’s events will also count for players from Australia and New Zealand
towards a special Order of Merit, with the leading player from the four
tournaments winning a place in the 2008 Grand Slam of Darts in November.

“Dart Players Australia have done a tremendous job in promoting professional
darts in the Oceanic region in recent years and this is a hugely exciting
development,” said PDC Chairman Barry Hearn.

“The Australian Grand Prix circuit has developed an unprecedented level of
competition, and the addition of a Players Championship to this week of
tournaments will allow Antipodean players the chance to take on some of the
most famous names in darts.”

Hearn added: “I am delighted to see South Africa’s inclusion in the William
Cross Pro-Am in a Tri-Nations format.

“We have been encouraged by the growth of darts in South Africa in the past
two years through the South African Open and South African Masters, and
players from that country can only benefit from this opportunity.”

Shoalhaven is based around two hours south of Sydney on the New South Wales
coast, and the Sports & Recreation Club has regularly hosted tournaments on
the AGP circuit in recent years.

The DPA will also be running events for ladies alongside the Shoalhaven
Classic and William Cross Pro-Am events, as well as Unicorn-sponsored
knockouts for boys and girls in the William Cross Pro-Am.

Dart Players Australia Chairman Kevin Berlyn said: “We are delighted to

Shane was first to the double in the 2nd leg and took the leg with a 24 finish score 1-1

Russell took the 3rd leg after Shane missed 3 clean darts at D16 for a 2-1 lead including his first maximum of the game

Russell started well in the 4th leg with back to back 100′s…backed up with 140 to take a clear advantage, Russell hit 85

to leave Double 8 and narrowly missed but made no mistake on his next visit to take a 3-1 lead

Russell opened with 140 in the 5th to take the advantage …followed by another 140 …then hitting a ton

to leave a chance of a darter, 121 and hit it. The crowd went wild Russell Stewart 4-1.

Russell Stewart stepped up to the oche again in the 6th for a 15dart leg including back to back 140′s for a 5-1 lead

to move 1 leg away from the game.

Tichowitsch started slowly in the 7th as did Russell with opening 60 scores, the pair traded consistent scores of 60 in the leg

Seems both players are taking a breather in this leg and the big scoring we have seen in the previous legs gone.

Prize money will pass £4 million in 2008, and with the circuit expanding into Asia, with the Asian Masters scheduled for the summer, and Australia.

“Our support for the global growth of professional darts will continue in the United States, South Africa, Australia and Germany, as well as in Asia and Canada this year,” said Hearn.

THE PDC are to introduce two new, televised tournaments within the next year as part of the continuing expansion of the professional circuit.

A new European Open will take place in Holland in October, establishing a PDC-organised tournament for the first time in the Netherlands.

The PDC will also introduce a Players Championship Finals, to be held in January 2009.

This event will see the top 32 players from the Players Championship Order of Merit – comprising all Players Championship tournaments staged in 2008 – playing off in a knockout competition.

PDC Chairman Barry Hearn announced the two events at the PDC Annual Awards Dinner, as well as revealing his plan to push prize money to £10 million in the coming years.

“Prize money is rapidly approaching £4 million and our long-term target is to offer TEN million pounds per year on the professional circuit.

“Let me leave you in no doubt, there is only one place for players with the ambition and talent to play professional darts – within the PDC.”

Hazel Wins NZ Title

PHILLIP HAZEL has won the New Zealands Chartered Clubs Darts Assn  Singles title, earning him a Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship place.

The Kiwi recently qualified for the PartyPoker.net Las Vegas Desert Classic, and continued his form by taking the national title.

He won through a 210-player field to claim the title, which also earns him a place in December’s Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace.

“I’m over the moon,” said Hazel, who defeated Bernie Smith in the final. “It’s been a great year so far and can only get better.

“To qualify for in Las Vegas was the highlight of my career only to top that with a TV appearance against James Wade.

“But winning the New Zealand Championship title now gives me the opportunity to represent myself and New Zealand at the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship.

“I am sure I will do New Zealand and myself proud. The experience I gained in Vegas will help me in the UK and I am looking forward to being at the world’s most prestigious event.”

DartPlayers Australia chairman Kevin Berlyn added: “Phil has shown great ability over the past six months.

“Although he’s a relative unknown in the PDC he showed great form in Las Vegas and he’s a great example of the players being produced on the DPA and DartPlayers New Zealand circuit.”

The tournament also saw Bernie Smith hit a nine-darter, although he eventually went down in the final.

Dear John,

It has been a while. I read with interest your comments on the upcoming World Championships. Obviously I will be listening over the internet to select matches (we are on a dial up connection and it can get pricey).

I read also your comments on the importance of a smooth release and follow through to sustain a consistent throw and accuracy. I have struggled with this as well. In longer tournament formats my release was letting me down in that I would tire at the shoulder and wrist and just lose any form I had. I have been reviewing tapes of your matches and have picked up that your release is more of a “flicking or pitching” of the dart than a longer held release. I have tried it in practice and cannot believe the difference. Such a small thing and yet so important over the long haul. I tend still to revert to my bad habits and really have to concentrate to make the change, but it will be worth it.

Chris Rudd from Rankin Inlet, Nanavut, In the Arctic sent that observation and with it a note for help, I have had many such messages lately and though it was time to try and help.
Gripping a dart and releasing it is not a difficult operation, it is made difficult by people who usually have an unusual way of holding a pen to write, this is one of the first things we are taught at school, however they do not teach you the correct way to hold the pen, they leave you to find the most comfortable and easiest way that will enable you to write without any difficulty,
When I hold a dart it is with the same grip as the pen but the thumb and index finger go to the back of the barrel unlike the pen were all contact with the pen are made at the front.
How tight should I grip the barrel you say, well try to think of golf and the grip, all instructors say you should let the golf club lay in your hand then place your fingers round the grip and hold firmly but not tightly, darts is the same, hold the dart so it does not move around in your hand but don’t squeeze the day lights out of it.
The throwing action is again like golf but not as complicated, golf has a backswing, darts similarly has a drawback, the arm is withdrawn towards the shoulder, the golf backswing can be over exaggerated, the darts drawback can likewise be overdrawn, some players take the hand holding the dart way past eye sight level and almost back and down onto the shoulder, this is unnecessary and can lead to all sorts of problems, one noticeable one is dartitus, by taking the arm to far back it can become locked for a minute part of a second in the fully retracted position, the fluid action then stops and the next action the forward movement of the arm becomes a totally separate action, this means the drawback action of the arm was unnecessary and the player might just as well have started with the dart and the arm in the fully drawback position at the beginning of the throw.
It is important to make the draw back action and the forward action and release all one, smooth, fluent, clean.
I would suggest that you stop the drawback action when the hand is about four inches from your face and still in view, do not stop the action there but make the transition from going backward to going forward in an unstopping movement, it is almost as if the arm has a spring attached to it that has tightened up as the arm is withdrawn then the spring pulls forward and the arm follows towards the target, if you notice many of the very successful professionals keep their hand almost parallel to the ground when bringing the arm back, they cock the wrist to do this, you can observe this by watching videos or the next Tv championship, Phil Taylor in particular keeps his dart very straight.
The release of the dart should be at the exact spot in the action, not to early not to late, I suggest the right time is when you feel the dart is being dragged down by the arm as it extends, when it begins to leave the parallel it should be released, of course the way to make this easier is to keep the arm going straight for as long as possible with no downward action, this will mean the dart will automatically be released because you cannot hold on to it any longer, try that a few times and then find the right time for you to release the dart.
The follow through is of the utmost importance, as you release the dart the hand should be open fully and follow behind the dart towards the intended target, again just like the golf swing.
Well that’s the grip, the draw back and the release that leaves only one thing that can and does ruin all, the stance, this like everything varies from player to player but there as to be a practical and most common stance that can be used then adapted by everyone, bad habits are very hard to cure and if the stance is not right at the start of a player taking up the sport then it could effect any progress for years.
I do not claim to have the perfect stance but it is one that has kept my game in good shape for many years and what’s more I do not suffer from back ache like many other players who take up complicated stances.
I suggest: right foot forward (if you are right handed) do not turn the foot so that the shoe is parallel to the oche, settle for a position half way between parallel about 45 Deg, this will have the desired effect of turning the body to make the right side nearer the target line, the left foot should be behind the body with the sole of the foot firmly on the ground, the heel raised off the ground, I believe that this back foot is the secret to consistent throwing, many players lift this foot off the ground when the forward throwing movement is made, this in turn allows the body to go forward, the head moves and only the very best players can achieve a result from all the movement caused.
If the back foot remains still at the forward movement the success rate of the dart hitting it’s target will be greatly increased.
Were should you stand at the oche? I believe this is a trial and error situation, I started some 30 years ago in the middle of the oche, I then moved to the left of centre, years later and I find myself at the right hand side of the oche almost off the end, the reasons I have convinced myself are eye sight.
I had a motor cycle accident a few years into my darts playing had started, my left eye was left weaker than the right, I moved on the oche unconsciously, it was only after a year or so that other players told me that I was not throwing from the same position, I did not change for years, as I got older I gradually came across to the other side of the oche, I tried to reason this with my optician on my first eye test at the age of 50 (that is ten years past the normal for the latest eye test I am told) he informed me the vision seen through the eyes relates to the brain and the body acts to the information received, in my case the eyes are telling the brain that I am lined up to the board in an even position.ie. the board is the same distance on the right as it is on the left, of course that cannot be true because I know I am right of centre making the board further away on the left, providing you are not right off the oche it will or should not make that much difference to the distance throw, if it feels right it usually is right.

Chris asked me how I could make all this simpler, I told him to imagine having a piece of wood cut at the exact height when your arm is held out with the upper arm at 45 deg, the wood would fit right under your elbow, if you could then practice the backward and forward movement and the release of the dart you would have the perfect action, it would be very robotic but I assure you it would work.
The only ingredient missing from all of this is the human one, you like me have seen players with terrible actions yet the result is unbelievable, Jocky Wilson comes to mind with that last dart, he would almost throw his whole body at the board yet he would hit the target a lot more than most, this is the mind correcting the body action, although it is the wrong action the mind is strong and can overcome and correct the patern used midway through.
I suggest it is better to start right and make those minor adjustments later, have a sound base and go from there.
I trust someone out there has found this the easiest and yet many make it the most difficult part of darts, helpful, remember the order, grip, stance, drawback, forward and release, put them all together in one fluid movement, repeat twice more and presto you are on your way to becoming efficient and not proficient.

It goes a bit like this you work out your average then you are put in a grade Premier Div 1 Div 2 Div 3 male and female you play teams games 4 aside doubles mixed doubles singles over a week with a day off in the middle (so you can dry out for the day) I’m sure if you could get a group of over 45 players who wished to play you may find this an enjoyable event of cause you realize that if you were to start the NZ legends then the 400 of us would probably have to visit you for a week in a couple of years time

The Voice Downunder

Dartplayers Australia are pleased to announce its guest MC for the Upcoming
William Cross Pro Am. The PDC’s Russ Bray will be flying into Sydney to MC
the first Tri Nations event at the William Cross as well as all the finals
on stage…

“First can I say thanks to Dartplayers Australia for inviting me over to Oz
for the William Cross PRO-AM and to the Tri Nations tourney in August. I
have never been to Oz and it is the one place most of us Brits dream about
going to, and I am one of those for sure.

I have called on every other Continent, except Oz, this I think will make me
the first Darts Ref to have called at a major Tournament in every
Continent…Wow, that is some thought.I am so looking forward to calling and MC’ing both of the Tournaments and
certainly meeting a few of the Aussie guys, that I have had the pleasure of
meeting, when they have come over here for our our Tournaments.I have spoken to the Pro’s that have been over to the William Cross and what
a fantastic time they all had from the stories they have told me. Now I will
be able to tell my stories to every one of my dream trip to Oz,,,I am
certainly looking forward to having a good few tinnies with you guys when I
get there, and seeing how our cousins live downunder.Thanks again Australia for the invite…we will have a ball”

Russ has one of the most recognisable voices in the world of darts and now
‘The Voice’ is part of the most recognisable brand in the world of darts.
Top referee Russ Bray is Team Unicorn’s latest big-name signing.

His familiar gravel tones are known worldwide and Unicorn will be producing
a special range of Russ Bray products to mark the new tie-up.

The cry of “game on” and the shout of “one hundred and eighty” have made
Russ a household name. He is highly respected as a referee all over the
world and is hugely popular with darts fans wherever he goes.

It is by a strange twist of fate that Bray came to the job that has made him
the man he is today. “It’s all about being in the right place at the right
time,” he admitted.

Russ used to throw a mean dart or two. He was a county standard player with
Hertfordshire for many years and actually played the professional circuit.

“I really enjoyed that time and won a couple of tournaments. Eric Bristow
and I won the Finland and Norway Pairs Titles and it was a lot of fun. I
have to be honest though and admit I wasn’t quite good enough to go all the
way to the top.”

He stumbled into calling and refereeing by accident. Russ explains: “At one
of the county matches, the caller didn’t turn up. I stepped in, people like
what they heard and it all went from there.”

In 1996, Russ contacted the PDC to see if they wanted a reserve referee to
support the experienced Freddie Williams and Bruce Spendley. He was given a
trial at the World Matchplay Championships in Blackpool.

He takes up the story: “It was unbelievable because my first ever match
featured the great John Lowe. It gave me a real buzz. I thought it had all
gone well and they gave me a job! My first tournament, as part of the team,
was the 1997 World Championships at the Circus Tavern and to be honest, I’ve
never looked back.”

It is certainly a pressure job in front of packed houses and a huge live TV
audience on Sky Sports but Russ takes it all in his stride.

“The maths are second nature. It is just like riding a bike! Sometimes
though, it can go wrong!”

“At the World Championships a few years ago, I made a complete mess of
calling a throw from Colin Lloyd. I got it wrong, then got it wrong again,
before finally getting it right! Colin saw the funny side and the crowd were
laughing as well. Somebody wanted to give me their glasses!”

The distinctive sound of ‘The Voice’ has brought him a new following. He now
does a lot of voice-over work. Russ has also appeared in TV programmes like
Eastenders, Family Affairs and Little Britain. He has also made his acting
debut on the big screen, appearing in a film called ‘Heartlands’.

Russ has taken charge of the top matches all over the world, as darts
continues to spread its wings. He is also very much in demand for
exhibitions and does a lot of work in Holland with the likes of John Part,
Peter Manley, Andy Fordham and Daryl Fitton.

“I get a huge amount of enjoyment out of what I do and the deal with Unicorn
is the icing on the cake for me,” he said.

So, what about the best moments of his career? “The number one for me just
has to be back in July 2002. Phil Taylor’s history-making moment, when he
became the first player to nail a 9-dart finish on live TV. He was playing
Chris Mason at the World Matchplay Championships and to call that in was
just amazing.”

” There are three matches which really stand out for me. John Part’s epic
victory over Phil Taylor in the World Championship Final. Another game
involving Taylor, also at the Circus Tavern, when he beat John Lowe 3-1 but
it was a lot closer than that and there were 17 maximum’s in the match. The
standard was mind-blowing. Finally, Andy Jenkins against Steve Coote at the
Las Vegas Desert Classic in 2004. It just sticks in the memory bank, because
the quality of darts from both players, was fantastic.”

THE CIRCLE OF REAL LIFE

Its faultless It’s so very twenty first century. It’s Darts.

I am lying on a crumpled hotel bed with three pillows wedged between me and the wall, and I an getting rid of a couple of hours of a wet winter afternoon watching men play darts. The hours are irrecoverable. The men are on the other side of the world. The game they are playing may have happened yesterday or last week or last year I don’t know and don’t care.

I lie surrounded by discarded newspapers, an ashtray, a remote control and a packet of butter shortbread biscuits, doing nothing but adjusting the pillows from time to time to ease my neck without taking my eyes from the screen. I am engrossed.

Darts has cleaned itself up. When the game was first televised it was magnificently true to life. The players were fat drunks. They wore shirts the size of marquees. The table beside them was laden with pints of lager.

The ashtray smouldered like a small volcanic crater. Each player took aim with a cigarette pinched between the fingers of his non-throwing hand, the smoke wreathing round his fat enshrouded face so that he had to clench his piglet eyes against it. The air was so thick with smoke that they seemed to be playing in fog.

After they’d thrown, the athletes would waddle to the board, extract their darts and take a swig of beer as if by reflex. You could see their like in any pub. They were impossible men, ruined hulks who would not live long. Their laden hearts would falter, their livers give out, their lungs clog into wheezing. But it didn’t matter. The godhead had laid a hand upon them blessed them with a single extra-ordinary skill.

They threw darts like fat angels. Darts were their redeeming art. That art would bloat and kill them, but so what? Darts mattered.

Today the pints and cigarettes have gone, but the darts still matter. The players have turned professional. There’s big money in darts now. What these behemoths do is sellable around the world. It is sport boiled down to its essence. It is the end of the line. It is the rational conclusion of the western world.

A four year old could grasp darts’ rules in 30 seconds. Each match consists of sets, like tennis. Each set consists of legs. Each five-minute leg is a game within the game, mounting to its tiny climax of excitement.

Then they start again. It is one against one. At the end the winner will raise his pudgy arms in triumph. The loser will wilt and leave the stage. Because the field of play is tiny the camera can zoom in on faces. You can see the pearls of sweat along the upper lip. You can see the nerves that make the fingers tremble. You can see the tiny but unmissable effects of tension on the corners of the eyes, the creases in the forehead. Though these men say nothing, you get to know them. You get to care who wins.

Behind the players lit the cavernous semi­darkness of the modern pub somewhere in Essex, supporters bellow their encouragement. Most are young men in soccer shirts with pints in hand, but positioned among them are the players’ awful wives, their hair done horribly according to the fashion, excessive jewellery swinging from their ears. And with them their pasty children, drinking something sweet and fizzy, engrossed in the heroic theatre that their dads are acting out.

At moments of crisis the camera seeks out the wives and children to show the intensity on their unselfconscious faces. Their livelihood is on the line. Victory will bring a cheque to feed them through the months to come. Defeat will mean lean tines, a smaller car, no Teneriffe this year.

But above the needs and wants of those involved, beyond the fame and cash, this sport provides a rich and idle society with something it craves, something even the huge and neon-lit shopping mall can’t supply. Darts satisfies the lust for passion, tension conflict.

It doesn’t matter that it’s pointless. All sport is. It doesn’t matter that the men are ruined men, only that they fill the hours with some dim parody of war, of hunting, of competition for mating rights. In doing so they are enough to stave off boredom, to fill the hours between the raids on the supermar­ket, the empty evenings on the ghastly floral sofa, the loneliness of solitary men in pubs, the empty afternoons of men like me in hotel rooms. It spares us from the sad and sorry stuff that we call thought. This is the way the world ends. And I love it.

Friday Night the Men’s and Ladies played their Test matches, the New Zealand Ladies won 12 ~ 8 while the Men had to play a teams match after New Zealand lost the last 4 singles when they were 10 ~ 6 up. New Zealand played a dream game to come out the winners 11 ~ 10.
