JAMES WADE 3-1 WARREN FRENCH (3-1, 3-0, 2-3, 3-1) JAMES WADE gained his first ever win in the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship with a 3-1 defeat of New Zealander Warren French. Wade, the number 11 seed, looked on course to cruise to victory when he won eight of the game’s first nine legs to put himself on the brink of the win. However, he stuttered to allow French, the New Zealand National Champion, to pull back a set before booking his own place in the last 32 against qualifier Dave Ladley. Wade opened the match with a two-dart 74 finish, before landing a maximum on his way to a 2-0 lead, before French took out double top to pull back the third leg. Neither player seemed keen to take the fourth, with Wade missing a stack of doubles before French was wide on double ten and double five to allow him back in to take the set. French also missed darts in the second set as Wade took all three legs without reply to double his cushion, and when he added two more in the third victory seemed inevitable. But Wade – the World Matchplay finalist in July – stuttered before the finishing line, missing three darts for the match as French stepped in on double top to stay alive. Wade also missed the bullseye for the match in leg four as French levelled matters, before the Kiwi took out a fine 113 finish to take the set. French won the first leg of the fourth set with a two-dart 92 finish, but Wade kicked into gear with a maximum to start the second leg. French also opened with a 180 and followed that with a 140, but Wade edged the leg with a 13-darter and repeated the dose to move 2-1 up. Wade then finally crossed the finishing line with double ten to complete a hard-fought win. “I’m disappointed with my performance because I’ve put so much into it and can’t explain that display,” said Wade, who had lost in the first round in the last two years. “I’m relieved it’s over and I’ve got the win, and perhaps I put myself under pressure because I’ve lost before from being ahead. “I hope it was nerves and not a loss of form because I’ve prepared well. “But there’s no reason why I should not have averaged 90 and although I should be happy that I’ve won, I’m not.” Match Stats

Recieved 24/10/06 and every word is true. I was there. Dartplayers Australia

nzccda4.jpg ‘Wonder Kid’ – Mitchell Clegg made DPA and PDC history yesterday by winning the 2006 Oceanic Masters at the Central Coast Leagues Club in Gosford. The current Australian Junior Champion – Mitchell, who turns 16 in November becomes the youngest dart player to qualify for a World Championship event in the history of the Sport. However, he has a level of maturity far beyond his tender age as indicated by his darting prowess, growing list of darting achievements, Tournament victories and his display of professionalism over this past weekend of darts. He was far from tender at the oche! Mitchell’s journey started on Saturday morning with the round robin section of the event. He came second on his sheet with a 29 ave, losing only one game to his older brother – David. Sunday’s random sheet draw saw him pitted against DPA ranked #11 – Jerry Weyman in the Round of 32. In this best of 5 match Mitchell won 3-0. The round of 16 saw him again face his brother David, and he exacted his revenge winning the best of 7 leg match. The quarter finals saw him step up against DPA #4 and DPA Team Member – Peter Corcoran. Mitchell won this match . The semi finals were on stage and Mitchell faced Australian legend and DPA #5 – Russell Stewart who had been showing equally great form through the earlier rounds. Their match was a great display of darts with both players throwing 12 dart legs against the other. In the best of 11 match, Mitchell won 6-4 with an average of 30.54 (Russell Steward 28.88) Mitchell’s opponent in the Final was New Zealander – John Sinclair. John’s weekend events commenced on Friday night when he represented the NZ Chartered Clubs Association against the Dartplayers Australia Team. On Saturday he took out the ‘Australian Grand Prix Knockout’ which saw the top 16 qualifiers in the Oceanic Masters use this event as a preparation for Sunday’s main event. John defeated New Zealand’s Purfleet entrant – Warren French in a high quality final. In the early rounds of the Oceanic Masters, John defeated Dave Harrington (NZ), DPA #9 Dave Fitzpatrick and in the quarter final he dispatched fellow Kiwi Dave Jones. His on stage semi-final saw him playing DPA #3 Brian Roach, who had reached the stage by defeating DPA #2 Barry Jouannet in the Round of 32, Glenn Power (QLD) in the Round of 16 and Wayne Mercer (NZ) at the quarter final stage. John was in great form defeating Brian 6-1, so the stage was set for the Final that would either see John follow in the footsteps of last year’s winner Warren Parry or Mitchell creating Dart history by being the youngest ever entrant in a Darts World Championship event. The Final Mitchell won the bull, however it was John who took first blood with a 180 opening shot and the leg in 17 darts. Mitchell then opened his account in the second leg with an opening 140 and ultimately the leg in 18 darts after a number of missed shots at a double. The 3rd also went against the walk after Mitchell hit the 25 going for a 170 peg and John pinned 130 hitting 60,60 D5. The 4th leg went with walk and John saw himself ahead 3-1. The audience then got more and more involved in the match (if that was possible) as they witnessed a composed Mitchell fire in 4 consecutive legs that saw him draw ahead 5-3! These were terrific darts under pressure because John missed shots at D10 in the 6th, D20 in the 7th and fired in the second of his 180s to leave himself 32 in the 8th leg. This burst had the Aussie and Kiwi audience members raise the roof as they cheered support for their respective favourite. The 9th leg saw Mitchell miss snatching another leg against the walk when he missed D18 for a 15 dart peg. He busted Db9 by hitting D12, only to watch John peg D20 for a 16 dart leg of his own that saw John’s deficit reduced to 5-4 Mitchell then again proved his worth as he fired in another 17 dart leg against the walk to take himself to within a leg for victory. The 11th leg saw a dour struggle that included John’s 3rd 180. After 12 darts from each player Mitchell sat on 144 and John on 158. Mitchell went to the oche and produced the highest finish of the match when he threw in consecutive T20s and the Db12 peg to take the leg in 15 darts, and the match 7-4. (Mitchell’s ave 28.54 – John’s ave 27.34). The audience as a whole erupted in celebration for the young victor and DPA Founder – Kevin Berlyn was soon on stage finding it hard to put into words the impact of Mitchell’s achievement in being the youngest ever qualifier to a Darts World Championship. “It will take some time for Mitchell to appreciate just what he has achieved today.” Kevin said. “To receive this invitation onto the stage of the World’s richest Darts World Championship is an unbelievable achievement for a young man who only turns 16 in a couple of weeks time . . . he doesn’t understand right now that in December, he will be meeting Mr Phil Taylor – sitting down with him for a chat and a glass of soft drink. He doesn’t understand right now that doors will be opened to him that he cannot even comprehend right now. Mitchell, we congratulate you mate, and send you off to Purfleet knowing you are a world beater! and that you will do Australian darts, the DPA and most of all, yourself proud over there.” From Somewhere Behind The Oche . . . Rex McKay DPA MC Oceanic Masters 2006 The 2006 Oceanic Masters is only 2 weeks away…. With players from all over Australia and New Zealand converging on the Central Coast Leagues Club, Gosford , New South Wales….The DPA rankings have been finalised and the top 16 players automatically qualifying for round 2 of the oceanic , bypassing the first round, round robin. Qualifiers are Barry “China” Jouannet, Brian Roach, Peter Corcoran, Russell Stewart, Stuart Everson, Shane Haddy, Dave Fitzpatrick, Phil Heath, Jerry Weyman, Rod Crawford, Robert Denny, Craig Atze, Paul Cotton, Colin Bell, Colin Edwards, Kevin Luland These players have a 1 in 32 chance to join Anthony Fleet (Australia) and Warren French (New Zealand) and participate in the 2006/7 Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championships. The weekends events starts on Friday evening 20th October with the New Zealand vs Australia Test match, Australia will be defending the title after wining last year

MEDIA NEWS RELEASE

NEW ZEALAND SECURES INVITATION TO ATTEND WORLD

PDC DARTS CHAMPIONSHIP IN ENGLAND

Clubs New Zealand Darts Association spokesperson Wayne McBeath confirmed that their Association has been instrumental in gaining a Wild Card Invitation for their National Singles Dart Player to compete in the PDC (Professional Darts Corporation Ltd) Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championships. held annually at the Circus Tavern, Purfleet, England.

The Professional Darts Players Association was initially formed in the early 1980’s and reconstituted under the auspices of the Sports Industries Federation in 2001.

The PDPA is set up to look after the interests of professional players through an annually elected Board, which is headed by Chairman Peter Manley.

Membership of the PDPA is open to all players of the appropriate standard. There are around 300 members of the PDPA, who all have the right to qualify and play in PDC Premier televised tournaments.

The Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship, Stan James World Matchplay and Sky Bet World Grand Prix have qualifiers which are exclusive to PDPA members.

The Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship is held annually at the Circus Tavern, Purfleet, England in front of a live television audience, the event is currently televised live in its entirety on Sky Sports with highlights syndicated around the world to countries including the USA, China, Australia, South Africa, Holland and New Zealand.

This year the size of the tournament expanded from 48 to 64 players, with eight additional places being awarded to both qualifiers from the Professional Darts Players’ Association and international representatives.

“Make no mistake about it, this is massive news for darts, PDC Chairman Barry Hearn said.

“We are extremely grateful to the event’s sponsors Ladbrokes.com for their continued backing which has helped us to introduce a substantial prize fund increase and to our broadcast partner Sky Sports for their fantastic production of the event.

“We already offer our players the biggest and best tournaments, and this announcement will only increase our standing as the only organization that’s serious about taking the game forward both in the UK and around the world.”

John O’Reilly, Managing Director of Ladbrokes eGaming, added: “Darts continues to grow in popularity, and that’s been reflected in the growth in betting on the World Championship during our sponsorship.

“This is the most prestigious event in the darts calendar and it gives us great pleasure to attach the name of the Worlds biggest bookmaker to World’s biggest and best darts championship.”

The top 32 players in the PDC World Rankings joined the 16 PDPA qualifiers and 16 international players in the first round of this year’s championship.

warren_in_england_small.jpgWarren on stage in England

Parry meets an in form Walsh. Warren four times New Zealand champion knew he was stepping into unknown territory, although darts in New Zealand is tough it does not have the week in week out competition enjoyed in the UK, the short first round format of best of five sets does not give any player the time to settle, especially the overseas players who have never graced this famous stage, the score line at 3 sets to 0 sounds resounding and to be honest it was, Mark Walsh in this form is capable of beating anyone.Walsh, who has risen to 12th in the world rankings over the past year, secured his first win in three attempts at the Circus Tavern. The Budweiser UK Open finalist began the game in superb form, taking the first set 3-1 with a checkout of 101, which was bettered in the next with a brilliant 161 finish. That put him 2-0, and though Parry landed the next leg, he took the fourth to win the second set and move to within one of the match.Parry took the first leg of the next set, but Walsh hit double 18 to level matters and a 110 finish to go 2-1 up.And though the New Zealander levelled matters to take the set into a decider, Walsh landed double ten to wrap up the win.
